William Vincent Wallace: Overview

William Vincent Wallace: William Vincent Wallace (b. Waterford, 11 March 1812; d. Vieuzos, 12 Oct 1865).

Born in Waterford, Ireland, William Vincent Wallace showed an early aptitude for music; and his father, who was a regimental bandmaster, taught him the clarinet and piano. In his teens he also learnt to play the violin and organ, and by 1828 he was engaged as second violin in the band at the Theatre Royal, Dublin. Two years later he was appointed organist of Thurles (Catholic) Cathedral. He entered the Roman Catholic Church, adopting the additional nameof Vincent, and in 1831 married Isabella Kelly, one of the young boarders in the neighbouring Ursuline Convent. The couple settled in Dublin; but, becoming increasingly disenchanted with Dublin musical life, William Vincent Wallace decided to try his luck in Australia. In November 1835 he sailed to Hobart Town with his wife and infant son, his sister and his brother. After giving a single concert there, the family moved on to Sydney, where they opened the first Australian music school in Bridge Street. In January 1838 William Vincent Wallace organised the first Australian music festival in St Mary's Cathedral; and the following month he sailed away secretly for Valparaiso, leaving behind him debts of approximately £2,000.

During the next five years William Vincent Wallace travelled extensively in South America, the East Indies, the West Indies, Mexico, and the United States. Returning to Europe in 1844, he carried out a concert tour of Germany and Holland and made his debut as a concert pianist in London the following May. During that summer a chance meeting with Balfe's friend, Hayward St Leger, led to a suggestion that William Vincent Wallace should write an opera for Alfred Bunn to produce at Drury Lane. Edward Fitzball provided the libretto; and Maritana was produced at Drury Lane on the 15th November 1845 with enormous popular suecess. But William Vincent Wallace's next opera, Matilda of Hungary (1847), to a libretto by Bunn was not liked.

During Berlioz's visit to London in 1848, the two men met and got on well together. Berlioz described William Vincent Wallace as 'an excellent, eccentric man, phlegmatic in appearance like many Englishmen, bold and impetuous by nature like an American' and was impressed by the tales of his adventures - 'carrying off women, fighting several duels, which proved unlucky for his adversaries, he lived a savage life...'

The same year William Vincent Wallace started to write his third opera, Lurline, to a libretto by Fitzball based on the legend of the Lorelei; but a financial crisis at Covent Garden meant production had to be postponed. William Vincent Wallace stopped composing and spent the next three years touring South and North America, becoming a citizen of the United States in 1850. Returning to London, he settled down as a piano teacher. When asked by the Pyne/Harrison English Opera Company for a new opera for their Covent Garden season, he offered them Lurline, and on its production in 1860 this proved to be nearly as successful as Maritana. He wrote The Amber Witch (1861) for Mapleson at Her Majesty's, and two other operas - Love's Triumph (1862) and The Desert Flower (1863) - for the Pyne/Harrison Company. He died at the Chateau de Haget near Vieuzos in 1865.
