Tom Jones: CDs & DVDs - The Best CDs & DVDs of Tom Jones

Tom Jones: Overview

Tom Jones: Thomas Woodward was born in Glamorgan in 1940 and spent eight years singing for small cash, first as Tiger Tom and then as Tommy Scott And The Senators (a bid to sound exotic in Merthyr Tydfil clubs). He chose Scott as a good name for a rocker and for having the right alliterative ring. He was spotted by pop entrepreneur Gordon Mills, who wasn't impressed with the name: Woodward wasn't Scottish; the Senators weren't American. Mills got inspiration from a film he'd just seen, 1963's Tom Jones starring Albert Finney.

Mills thought it would link the singer to the successful movie (based on a 1749 Henry Fielding novel), associate Jones with the raffishly-romantic hero, provide an easy name to remember, emphasise his roots (Jones being a common name in Wales) and provide a visual image. (Jones was soon decked out in tight breeches, backed by The Squires.)

Unflattering derivative: The Prince Of Wails (a nickname also used for Johnnie Ray). Nicknames: The Voice, Jones The Voice. Jones was later knighted.
