Thomas Dolby: This British musician was born Thomas Morgan Robertson in 1958. Dolby (from Dolby Laboratories, maker of the best-known systems of noise reduction - and a registered trade mark) was a nickname he got at school because he was inseparable from his cassette recorder. Dolby Labs moved to sue him for trade mark infringement in 1987. The star argued that the company could not stop anyone called Dolby from using the name. The company got him to agree to only use "Dolby" with "Thomas" attached.
