The Edge: Overview
The Edge: The name "David Evans" is little known. Born in 1961, he played with (long-gone, commercially unsuccessful) acts Feedback and The Hype.
Contrast that with The Edge, world famous as a guitarist with Irish band U2.
Evans and The Edge are the same man; the stagename came during his teenage years in Dublin.
The Edge and his musical partner Bono say in 2006 book U2 by U2 the moniker comes from his angular head. The Edge told U.K.'s Channel 4: "It's the nose." Bono, in 2005 book Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas, said: "It had something to do with the shape of his head, his jaw."
There are some extra reasons that Bono adds, which have sometimes been taken as the only reason for the name.
First, it's something to do with his reputation as an outsider. Their circle of teenage friends, from Lypton Village, at first called Dave by the nickname 'Inchicore' - the name of small town on the outskirts of Dublin. Dave, with his Welsh origins, was on the edge of the group: quiet, watching and listening on the fringe rather than joining in.
Second, the name is sometimes said to relate to what Bono calls, in the Assayas book, "the insane love he had for walking on the edges of very high walls, bridges, or buildings." This seems to be secondary.
Among other reasons put forward: David's mind was sharp (yes, but so were their other friends) and he was like The Edge, the hero of Western novels by George Gilman (yes, but the band apparently didn't know of the character as teenagers.).
