The Doors: Overview
The Doors: James Douglas Morrisson (as he then was) stumbled on the name for his future band in conversation with fellow U.C.L.A. student Dennis Jakob.
They were discussing Dionysus (as one does) and remembered a line from William Blake, the 18th century British poet and artist: "If the doors of perception were cleansed, man could see things as they truly are, infinite" (The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell: A Memorable Fancy, 1790.)
They knew the quote had been borrowed by British writer Aldous Huxley in 1954 for his The Doors Of Perception. This was his long essay about experiments with the drugs mescalin and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). This book was studied closely by Jim, who was soon conducting "experiments" himself. (Cf Huxley references Eyeless In Gaza, the Feelies.)
Jim and Dennis were planning an imaginary rock duo based on their reading and contemplated the name The Doors: Open and Closed. Dennis was no longer involved by the time The Doors came together from Los Angeles bands Rick and the Ravens and the Psychedelic Rangers.
