The Doobie Brothers: The Californian name was suggested as a joke by acquaintance and housemate Keith 'Dyno' Rosen. The band weren't brothers and claim they didn't know what "doobie" meant and innocently thought it had something to do with "dooby-doo music" and the like. Caught on the hop a few hours later, they gave it as their name rather than "Pud", their previous choice, which was unlikely to lead to success.
They soon found a "doobie" was slang for a cannabis cigarette. It had already found its way into literature via Armistead Maupin and Richard Merkin. After the truth dawned, the Doobies often said it was a family name to avoid radio bans. Cf Jefferson Airplane.
