The Cult: Overview

The Cult: Band from Bradford, United Kingdom, which started off as a punk band called Violation.

Singer Ian Astbury, who developed a fascination for American Indian culture and clothes, said Southern Death Cult, the new name, was a Mississippi delta tribe. He has offered several accounts on how he found it: from a book in Bradford library, a sticker off the book or a volume found lying on the road. It could also be seen as an attack on prosperous southern England from the recession-hit north (a line pursued later by The Beautiful South).

Astbury has been the only constant in the band's development as they reformed, regrouped, moved from punk to heavier metal and abbreviated the name to the Death Cult. This didn't last long - "we realised we might not sell many records called that", he told the author. They became simply The Cult.

The Cult's later music, coincidentally, also recalls the driving rock of Blue Öyster Cult.

Spinoff: Four Horsemen. More American Indian influence: Crazy Horse etc.
