The Commodores: Overview

The Commodores: When two fledgling groups - The (Mighty) Mystics and The Jays - came together in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1967, a change of name seemed to be sensible to keep peace among members.

Singer Lionel Richie said in an interview for this book: "We had all kinds of wonderful ideas - 'The Fantastic Soulful Six', 'The Mighty Wonders'. We almost broke up trying to come up with a name.

"We turned to the dictionary and [trumpet player] William King stuck his finger on a page and came up with 'commodore', a naval term describing someone who ranks between captain and admiral. We were lucky because that word was close to 'commode', and we might have ended up as 'The Commodes', wearing suits made out of toilet paper!"
