Queen: Overview

Queen: The British band's name was suggested by Freddie Mercury in 1970, sitting in the Truro kitchen of Win, mother of drummer Roger Meddows-Taylor (who dropped the 'Meddows' for added brevity and street-cred). She recalled: "He kept saying how regal it sounded." Queen was simple, short, had royal references and endless visual possibilities.

Mercury had to fight for his choice. "Queen" was then the usual British euphemism for homosexual, as opposed to "gay" - which was still used in its original meaning, as in "happily carefree". Freddie wasn't referring to the House of Windsor either. It was an appropriate parody of his outrageous flamboyancy - before anyone else made fun of it. The man always had a sense of humour.

Queen won over The Grand Dance (from C.S. Lewis' Out Of The Silent Planet books) and Rich Kids, a Cocteau reference later used elsewhere. Band members had also worked with Smile (a name considered by Iron Maiden), Ibex and Sour Milk Sea. Tribute bands include: Kween; Magic; The Royal Family.
