Paul McCartney: Overview

Paul McCartney: bassist, Fab Four mop-top, lovable long-haired Liverpudlian lad, known as 'Macca', was born James Paul McCartney.

He had two flirtations with the stagename Paul Ramon (chosen "because it sounded really glamorous ... Valentino-ish"). He first toyed with it in 1960, when the Silver Beetles adopted stagenames during their tour supporting Johnny Gentle. It was revived when he dropped in on a London recording session for The Steve Miller band in February 1969. (Hence The Ramones).

Some of his 1960s material was credited to writers A. Smith or Bernard Webb, said to be anonymous French students, because Macca feared people would say the songs were only hits because of his name. (His brother recorded as Mike McGear in a bid to avoid comparisons.)

Other one-off stagenames include: Apollo C. Vermouth (producing The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band) The Country Hams (playing a song written by his father Jim) and Percy "Thrills" Thrillington (a Muzak version of Wings's 1971 Ram LP).

He was knighted in 1997. The Smoking Mojo Filters.
