Luciano Berio: Overview
Luciano Berio: Luciano Berio (b. Oneglia, 10 0ct 1925).
Luciano Berio's earliest musical studies were with his father. He later attended the Verdi Conservatorium in Milan, where his teacher in composition was Ghedini, and then continued his studies in the United States with Dallapiccola. His early works include Nones, a setting of W. H. Auden, and Mutazioni {Mutations) for chamber orchestra, written in the 1950s. Later, Luciano Berio turned his attention to electronic music, and for some time now his compositions have been largely electronic. Other works have been composed especially for performance by his former wife Cathy Berberian, a singer and performer. As founder of the Milan electronic studio in 1955, Luciano Berio was instrumental in stimulating Italian interest in this type of composition. At one time, he was considered to be one of the most promising of contemporary composers, but although his music is easier on the untutored ear than much of what passes for composition in the electronic world he has produced little in recent years to suggest that his music will endure when it ceases to.be fashionable.
