Kiss: Overview

Kiss: This American band formed in 1972 and toyed with the name Wicked Lester. Kiss was from The New York Dolls (singers of 1973's Looking For A Kiss), the idea of singer-guitarist Paul Stanley (born Stanley Harvey Eisen). It was the most intimate activity they thought they could get away with as a moniker. It also fitted in with surname of original drummer Peter Criss (born Peter Crisscoula). Bassist Gene Simmons, born Chaim Klein in Israel, was called Gene from an early age and so lifted his Americanised stage prenomen from actress Jean Simmons.

Their first record was released with marathon kissing contests. KISS is often reproduced in capitalised form to fit in with their logo, which makes the ‘SS' look like lightning bolts. This was the idea of lead guitarist Paul 'Ace' Frehley. This seemed cool until (1) someone noticed the 'SS' happened to look like Nazi SS insignia, now illegal in Germany, and forced them to change the KISS logo there to KIZZ; (2) the capitals promoted speculation that it's an acronym. The group's members deny it stands for anything, be it "Knights/Kids In Satan's Service" or "Keep It Simple Stupid". More kissing: The Pogues.
