King Crimson: Overview
King Crimson: A 1969 British concert began with the following words: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Giles, Giles and Fripp - who for reasons best known to themselves have changed their name to King Crimson - will have a freakout without the aid of pot, LSD or any other drugs." (Somehow, bands don't get introduced like that any more.)
The "reasons best known to themselves" came from their new composition In The Court Of The Crimson King, a narrative track featuring a devil-red character called King Crimson. It was the title cut on their dizzily-pretentious debut LP, subtitled An Observation By King Crimson.
The moniker produced some problems in the U.S. because people turned up expecting a soul act like King Curtis. Also known as "Crimso". Other Fripp bands include Discipline (named after 1981's Discipline LP), The League Of Gentlemen, The League Of Crafty Guitarists and Sunday All Over The World (this last with his wife, Toyah).
