Kid Creole And The Coconuts: U.S. producer Darnell Browder was of Haitian origin hence the "Creole". The "Kid" added echoes of the film King Creole.

The Kid wanted to get away from his native Bronx and dreamed up the idea of a band with a visual image akin to those in the nightclub scene in 1930's film King Kong - zoot suits, panama hats. His musical collaborator Ray 'Sugar Coated' Hernandez chose the similarly fanciful Coati Mundi.
