Joy Division: Overview

Joy Division: This celebrated Manchester band started at the height of punk, the summer of 1977. Their singer Ian Curtis sought guidance from The Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon. Curtis's widow Deborah says Ian was "deeply irritated" when Boon offered The Stiff Kittens as a standard punk name.

Instead they paid homage to David Bowie by becoming Warsaw, then reconsidered.

It was vital for bands of the time to have a supposedly shocking name to rival The Sex Pistols. So the final handle came in 1978, from a 1955 paperback novel about Nazi concentration camps, The House Of The Dolls, written by one 'Ka-Tzetnik 135633'. The Joy Division was the area of the prison which housed prostitutes.

Joy Division later evolved into New Order, a name said to have similar influences. Joy Division was never an apt choice though. While the band delighted the critics, they never sounded joyful, with brilliant tracks about isolation, depression and desolation - and Curtis sounding perpetually on the verge of the suicide he later committed.
