Jimi Hendrix: Overview

Jimi Hendrix: Official records list his birthname as Johnny Allen Hendrix, but his father insisted his son should have been James Marshall Hendrix and altered the name four years later. As Jimmy James he played with The Isley Brothers before forming Rainflowers, later called Jimmy James And the Blue Flames - named after The Blue Flames.

He reverted to Hendrix and changed the spelling to Jimi on crossing the Atlantic. The name of his best known group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, was suggested by ex-Animal-turned-manager Chas Chandler from the slogan "The band you have to experience". This name was in turn the inspiration for the 1967 debut LP title cut Are You Experienced? Chandler also managed Slade and named Randy California.

Hendrix inspired in whole or part the naming of Cry Of Love, Colorblind James Experience, The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience, The Sid Presley Experience, , , The Red House Painters, Third Stone and Voodoo Chile. His roadies included Lemmy.
