Jethro Tull: CDs & DVDs - The Best CDs & DVDs of Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull: Overview

Jethro Tull: The British band was struggling for gigs and forced to give itself a new name almost every time, often chosen by booking agents. After using Navy Blue (not great because their music wasn't blues) they were booked at the Marquee Club as Jethro Tull, after a leading 18th-century British agriculturalist; an agent had by chance seen Tull's book New Horse Hoeing Husbandry about a labour-saving seed drill. The club manager John Gee was the first to give them a repeat booking, so the name stayed.

Disregard stories that the name was chosen by Chrysalis in preference to Bag O' Blues - Tull was there before the band signed. A 1968 single, Aeroplane, mistakenly credited "Jethro Toe" but flopped, saving them from an unfortunate name. The name's often attached just to leader Ian Anderson, or abbreviated to Tull. Related: Blodwyn Pig.
