Iron Maiden: Overview
Iron Maiden: This British heavy metal band named after an old-fashioned torture instrument. (This came in two models. The Middle Ages version was a human-shaped cage on a rope to drop unfortunates in water until they drowned or confessed. The later deluxe model enclosed the victim in metal "maidens" – coffin-shaped sections with sharp inward-facing spikes.)
Maiden was formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, who previously played in Smiler, and took the name after seeing a movie adaptation of The Man In The Iron Mask. It also became a song of the same title. It's not a reference to East London soccer team West Ham United, sometimes called the Irons, who Maiden support, or to British politician Margaret Thatcher, who became known as "Iron Lady" in 1976 and Prime Minister in 1979.
