Human League: Overview
Human League: The League's antecedents all date from Sheffield, United Kingdom, in the mid-1970s, including the punkish Musical Vomit - not an auspicious beginning. By 1977, Martin Ware and Ian Craig-Marsh were known as The Dead Daughters. They renamed as The Future - a good choice, noting their electronic divergence from punkoid guitar. Phil Oakeysaw them and agreed they were "ahead of their time". He joined as the name changed to The Men and The Human League, from the science fiction computer game Starforce.
Computer-game fans Ware and Craig-Marsh, the band's founders, later left and formed B.E.F. and Heaven 17. Oakey paid them to keep rights to the Human League name. Related: The Rezillos.
