Hawkwind: Overview

Hawkwind: The British Silver Machine rock purveyors of the 1970s formed from the superbly-named Mobile Freakout and considered The Famous Cure (cf The Cure later) and Group X.

Their final choice was lauded by a generation of stoned hippies who thought it must mean something heavy: something to do with the slipstream from a predatory hawk perhaps. The connection was enhanced by a hawk logo. The name was originally Hawkwind Zoo, from a story by British author Michael Moorcock (1939-), who also inspired Tygers Of Pan Tang. He appeared with Hawkwind in concert and narrated their 1975 Warrior On The Edge Of Time.

Still, the complete truth is so prosaic it's simply hilarious, if you believe one ex-member of the group, Lemmy (who named Motörhead from a Hawkwind song and was sacked amid bitterness). He told the author he believed the Moorcock title was picked as an in-joke aimed at flautist/singer Nik Turner, who had aquiline features and a flatulence problem.

"I keep 'earing about some mythical bird, I mean of the feffered kind, called 'awkind," Lemmy said. "It's complete bollocks. ' E [Turner]-'ad a giant 'ook nose like a fucking 'awk's beak. THAT'S why we liked 'awkwind. And 'e was always farting like a bastard. That's it. End of story."

For legal reasons the band briefly was known as Hawklords.
