Guns N' Roses: Overview

Guns N' Roses: Part of the band, featuring W. Axl Rose, had started playing as A.X.L., recalls guitarist Chris Webber: "After A.X.L. we changed the name to Rose, and then Hollywood Rose, because we'd seen a band called Rose from New York in a magazine and wanted to make the distinction."

Axl left to play with L.A. Guns (formed by Tracii Guns) and finally the two bands merged, combining Americans with English-born Slash. The composite name was chosen in preference to unlikely legends such as Heads of Amazon and AIDS.

Guns N' Roses implied a heavy metal, explosive sound; and recalled protesters putting flowers in the barrels of the guns carried by troops and police. Cf . Related: Velvet Revolver.
