Green Day: The stars who made it big with American Idiot started in 1987 as Sweet Children. Larry Livermore, owner of Lookout! Records, recorded their title song Sweet Children. Just before its release, they wanted to rename because there was a local act called Sweet Baby.
Livermore says: "I went ballistic. I was like, 'Everybody knows you as Sweet Children. Green Day is dumb. It doesn't mean anything.'"
Their song Green Day's has the singer enveloped in white mist as "my lungs comfort me with joy". It's always seen as about innocence and pot-smoking.
The drummer went from birthname Frank Wright III to Tré Cool. The Ramones influenced the choice of names of some of their children (there's more in the Ramones entry). Spinoff: Pinhead Gunpowder.
