Gary Glitter: British singer Paul Gadd had been in showbiz for 12 years in 1971. He had taken his stepfather's surname to become Paul Russell (And His Rebels); then Paul Raven; Paul Monday; Boston International and even Rubber Bucket (for a single about a hippy squat).
He was advised by his record company to "bring more sparkle" into his act, and took this literally. He and manager/co-writer Mike Leander (born Michael Farr) dreamed up a range of flashy sequin jumpsuits and names such as Davey Dazzle, Horace Hydrogen, Stanley Sparkle, Terry Tinsel and Vicki Vomit. (Cf Larry Lurex, Alvin Stardust.)
They chose well and glam bam, thank you ma'am, the glitter bandwagon was born. Gary's back-up musicians, The Glitter Band, later became The G Band, while his hunky frame squeezed into silver suits led to the nickname The Bacofoil Bulk.
A legal dispute later broke out round the Glitter Band name. Glitter ran into more serious legal problems over Internet porn and was then jailed for child sexual abuse - which turned him from a star joke to pariah.
