Franz Ferdinand: This pop/rock band formed in Scotland in 2001. They loved the name "The Archduke", an entry in an equestrian race they saw on the television, rhythm guitarist Nick McCarthy said. This led to them remembering Austria's Franz Ferdinand, added bassist Bob Hardy.
Singer Alex Kapranos pointed to how the Archduke's death was a major factor in starting World War I and changing history. One of their early songs was about the Archduke's assassination. Still, "a name should just sound good ... like music", said Alex. They hoped that if they got good enough, people would think of them rather than the historical figure.
The name, they agreed, beat those of bands they had played with before in the 1990s, including The Yummy Fur, 10p Invaders and Embryo.
