Feedback: The Larry Mullen Band was history within hours of its formation in September 1976. Varying accounts say the name lasted 10 minutes (Larry Mullen Jnr. himself) or perhaps a day (other band members).
The drummer had placed a notice appealing for fellow musicians on a board in his Dublin school. The original six-piece then began rehearsing at Mullen's home. Bassist Adam Clayton was barely competent but the band got its name from the screeching noise that came from his portable amplifier.
"Feedback" was one of the few technical terms they knew, apart from "gig", said The Edge. In the 2006 book U2 By U2, Mullen said they "had a name for the band before we had anything else".
They became The Hype in March 1977 and then U2.
