Elton John: Overview
Elton John: The British star was born in 1947, in Pinner, as Reginald Kenneth Dwight - a name, he later said, that "sounded like a cement mixer".
At 14 he joined Bluesology. They backed both The Ink Spots on a British tour and Doris Troy, but the piano man quit, preferring songwriting with his partner Bernie Taupin. Urged to find a showbizzy tag by publisher Dick James (DJM), Dwight cast his mind back to Bluesology - and two latecomers: sax player Elton Dean and front-man Long John Baldry. He had created Elton John before the end of 1967.
Elton John legally became Elton Hercules John later. Hercules was one of his songs, on the contemporaneous Honky Chateau album. He said: "It gave me something to look up to and to remind me always to be strong." It's sometimes said to be after the rag-and-bone man's horse in U.K. TV series Steptoe And Son.
Elton John used his original name as the title for the 1988 LP Reg Strikes Back. An early budget-priced remake of others' hits was later released on CD as Reg Dwight's Piano Plays Pop.
At the end of 1997, Elton John was knighted for services to music. Sir Elton joins other "pop knights" including Bono (honorary), Bob Geldof (honorary), Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Tom Jones, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir George Martin and Sir Cliff Richard.
