Echo And The Bunnymen: The name of this Liverpool band, formed in 1978, produced controversy, sparked by the group's evasiveness in interviews. Guitarist Will Sergeant now says a friend called Paul Ellenbach kept suggesting strange soubriquets, such as The Daz Men, Glisserol (Glycerol) And The Fan Extractors and Echo And The Bunnymen.

The outfit formed as a support for The Teardrop Explodes. There wasn't much time to find a billing for what was planned as a short-lived unit.

Sergeant's always thought the alias too off-the-wall, cutting airplay. Vocalist Ian McCulloch said the appellation meant nothing and would counteract pretentiousness. He denied he was Echo - this was the name the early group gave to a drum kit for record demos.
