Dire Straits: Reflects the near-insolvent state of 27-year-old Mark Knopfler in 1977, a part-time teacher and musician playing with pub rockers such as Brewer's Droop. Knopfler, sharing a South London home with two others, toyed with the name Café Racers and scraped together £120 for a demo tape. The Straits name was at first too close for comfort and later ironic (cf Willie And The Poorboys). Brewer's Droop got a knowing reference in the 1982 song Industrial Disease.
