Creedence Clearwater Revival: Overview

Creedence Clearwater Revival: This Californian band began as Tommy Fogerty and The Blue Velvets, then traded as The Visions.

Their manager christened them The Golliwogs in a misguided attempt to make them sound British. The band hated both it and their uniforms but promotional posters had been printed. Fortunately their 1965 debut single didn't chart: in a racially-naïve yet divided America, they didn't realise the fury the name might cause. Among many similar American bands who used supposedly "British" names: Sir Douglas Quintet and The Byrds (at one stage called The Beefeaters). The new name grew over a few weeks in 1967:

• "Creedence" came from an acquaintance, Credence Newball. They thought his name had a ring of truth but amended it slightly so as not to offend him.
• "Clearwater" was from an advert about the benefits of pure drinking water used in Olympia beer. They liked its refreshing sound with environmental overtones.
• "Revival". There are a lot of errors commonly promulgated about this last name. Myths have mushroomed round it, partly because John Fogerty was for years evasive when asked to elucidate.

Some reference books say the Fantasy Label boss Saul Zaentz ('Zaentz Can't Dance') urged the band to change their name and revive American roots music. In fact, Fogerty told the author that Zaentz urged neither. The name showed their hope for better times at home after a disastrous few months, being forced into an image and name they "despised". "Both the name and the new records seemed to strike gold."
