Coldplay: Overview
Coldplay: A group of London students, playing under the name Starfish, were led by singer Chris Martin. He lived in the same building as guitarist Tim Rice-Oxley, who had a band called Coldplay, which wasn't having much success. Martin got agreement to use the name as Rice-Oxley's band became Keane.
Coldplay were, for some time, reticent about the name. Its origin, according to newspapers, was from a book of poems. Fan sites had speculated it's from a Paul McCartney song or to do with playing "cold" to an audience.
In the face of constant questions from fans (and the author), Coldplay has now put a short note on their official website. It confirms the original Coldplay took it from Child's Reflections: Cold Play by American Philip Horky.
Horky's publisher calls it "a stark collection" which "escapes the stylistic and structural conformity to explore the psychological realms". According to fan site coldplaying.com, Rice-Oxley "didn't like the name any more because it was too depressing".
