Canned Heat: Overview
Canned Heat: Borrowed from the title of Tommy Johnson's song Canned Heat Blues, recorded many times in the 1920s and 1930s, about Sterno, a chemical used in U.S. depression and prohibition as a cheap way of getting "canned". The name could also mean recorded passion, home heating and a Vietnam War-era bullet-holder.
The Johnson single was owned by Bob 'The Bear' Hite (named from his size) who founded Canned Heat in California in 1966. His co-founder was Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson (from his nocturnal studio visits and thick glasses).
