Blue Öyster Cult: Overview

Blue Öyster Cult: This New York heavy metal band initially tried for size the radically-different names of The Stalk Forrest Group, Oaxoa, The Cows and Soft White Underbelly, mostly suggested by leading light Sandy Pearlman.

Underbelly got well reviewed in U.S. magazine Crawdaddy but Clive Davis, president of CBS records, rejected their demo tape. They re-recorded it and decided to resubmit it to him under a new name.

Pearlman had moved from rock journalist to manager and was casting around for ideas while outside a New York seafood restaurant selling Blue Point Variety oysters. He went on to write a song called Blue Oyster Cult. The name applied to the band "just because it sounded cool" and the umlaut was put over the O to add mystery.

Pearlman denied suggestions that Blue Öyster Cult, or B.O.C. for short, came about from the link between PEARLman and OYSTER.

The tape under the new name was accepted by Davis at CBS and the musicians took a year to tell him the full story.

B.O.C. inspired other heavy metal bands to garnish their names with cod-Germanic symbols for no reason. Those who succumbed to this umlaut/diereses diarrhoea include: Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, Queensrÿche and Rëktum ( spoof).
