Blink-182: The U.S. punk perpetrators started off just as "blink". The name was chosen for its vague sound - as they said, "just the sound of the word brings a smile to your face." They then ran into claims of copyright infringement, apparently by a techno band from Ireland and added the 182.
The author asked the group about the significance of the number: there have been reports it's a reference to the number of times humans blink. Their reply, alas, is unprintable, suffice to say it could be the number of times band members have indulged in sexual self-satisfaction - "or it could just be that we think the numbers go together well." Go figure. In a subsequent TV interview, founder Tom DeLonge confirmed the numbers were chosen at random. The most common report had been that it was the number of "fucks" uttered by Al Pacino in the movie Scarface.
