Black Sabbath: Overview

Black Sabbath: Started in 1967 in Birmingham, United Kingdom, by Ozzy Osbourne, whose first band went through hippy-inspired names Polka Tulk, Mythology, Whole Earth and Earth. There was another band called Earth, better known and playing soft rock; audiences might turn up expecting that style - and get blown away by Ozzy and his mates at full volume.

A change was in order, and they took the title of one of their early songs to become Black Sabbath, frequently abbreviated "Black Sab". The song came from bass player Geezer (Tony) Butler's interest in black magic, as discussed in a non-fiction book The Devil And All His Works by author Dennis Wheatley. There was also a 1963 film of the same name, featuring three horror stories by Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy and Howard Snyder - all introduced by Boris Karloff.

The same interest and image was also followed by many other heavy metal stars, not least Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Spin-off: Dio. Partly inspired: , .
