Bird: Overview
Bird: Charlie Parker rapidly became Charlie "Bird" Parker. Within years the nickname had become bigger than the name. Within hours of his death in 1955, "Bird Lives" was daubed on the walls of the New York subway.
Arranger and composer Gil Evans insisted the name came when Parker was a teenager in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. "He would joke: 'Well, I'm going home to catch one of the yardbirds and cook it' - that's what he called chicken".
Cf Yardbirds, Birdland. The nickname was also applied to jazz arranger Bert Johnson.
