Barenaked Ladies: Overview

Barenaked Ladies: This 1990s pop band from Toronto, Canada, has a very misleading name. It certainly attracts attention - and away from the five chunky guys called Steven, Ed, Jim, Andy and Tyler who make the grungy music. Far from being naked, they favour thick clothes of several layers.

The band said: "It's a term we all used when we were kids of six or seven years old. You looked at someone with no clothes on, or at the picture of a nude woman, and say they were barenaked."

The founders Ed (Robertson) and Steve (Page) met again in 1988, long after they had been at school together. They recalled the name - with its innocent sexuality - while making up stories about bands at a concert, bored with the music. Robertson had been in a covers band which had broken up. When he had a call a week later to remind him that his group was entered into a talent concert, he impulsively said it had renamed as "Barenaked Ladies" and called Page to ask for help.
