Band Aid: Overview
Band Aid: Bob Geldof's name for his "supergroup" which cut the three million plus-sales 1984 single Do They Know It's Christmas to aid the starving in Ethiopia.
The appellation was preserved for the Band Aid Charity which organised the July 1985 Live Aid concerts. The title produced some concern about Band-Aid plasters - which many saw as petty, given the charity purpose (the plasters were written with a hyphen, the band without). Geldof was keen to stress that the designation did not mean they were simply trying to patch over the starvation problem.
Arthur Lee of Love recorded a 1972 solo album which used musicians collectively known as Band Aid, so-called "because the band helped me out".
