Badly Drawn Boy: This badly-bobble-hatted United Kingdom tunesmith is nowhere near as slapdash and lazy as his name and woolly image suggest. From his debut at a Manchester nightclub, he's been making crafted music, aware that his birthname Damon Gough isn't especially memorable. Taking the same sort of cue as Fatboy Slim, he's gone for humour.
He adopted his name in 1997. A long-time admirer of the Viz adult comic, he loved May 1983's one-off Badly Drawn Man, with all the jokes stemming from the dashed-off delineation.
Viz responded by parodying a pop singer who failed to sell records and ends up begging and busking - called, naturally, Badly Overdrawn Boy.
The source is sometimes wrongly given as the simply-drawn hero of a TV show, Sam And His Magic Ball.
