Acker Bilk: Overview

Acker Bilk: Acker Bilk, (Bernard Stanley Bilk), but known as "acker" from old Southern English slang for "friend". British jazz musician and bandleader (born Jan. 28, 1929, Pensford, Somerset, Eng.—died Nov. 2, 2014, Bath, Eng.), played clarinet with a full, rich tone and wore a trademark bowler hat while he led the Paramount Jazz Band for more than half a century. Bilk began (1948) playing clarinet while he was stationed in Egypt with the British army, and after returning home he led a jazz band in Bristol. He formed his Paramount band in 1956, a time when “trad” jazz, which revived the traditional New Orleans-jazz idiom, was at its height of popularity in England. Bilk made 12 records that became hits, climaxing with his original song “Stranger on the Shore” (1961), in which he was joined by a string orchestra; it rose to number one on music charts in England and the U.S. He also performed in the Richard Lester film It’s Trad, Dad! (1962). As trad-jazz popularity vanished by 1963, he transformed the Paramount band into a mainstream swing band. Bilk went on to record a series of “easy-listening” albums (with string accompaniment), including Sheer Magic (1977) and Evergreen (1978), both of which attained gold-record status. He was made MBE in 2001.
